Fish Pedicure

Letting little toothless fish eat the dead skin from your feet is supposed to be more gentle than razors or abrasive pads. . .

Known as "Doctor Fish" or "Garra rufa" they have been employed in this manner in Turkish spas for quite a while:

"They live and breed in the outdoor pools of some Turkish spas, where they feed on the skin of patients with psoriasis. The fish are like combfishes in that they only consume the affected and dead areas of the skin, leaving the healthy skin to grow, with the outdoor location of the treatment bringing beneficial effects."

It's picking up in the DC area as well:

"Fish pedicures are creating something of a splash in the D.C. area, where a northern Virginia spa has been offering them for the past four months. John Ho, who runs the Yvonne Hair and Nails salon with his wife, Yvonne Le, said 5,000 people have taken the plunge so far."

The CBS news story about a spa in California that does this:

Hmmm. . . I think I'd like to try this. Let the little creatures take away the old and let my skin be rejuvenated.

It's interesting to see all of the biological solutions to medical conditions we're seeing. Psoriasis treated with little fish, medical leeches that let fingers be reattached with less nerve damage by keeping blood flow high, using maggots to clean away the dead and rotten flesh from wounds so that the healthy flesh (which maggots won't eat) is left behind unhindered by infection. http://www.livescience.com/health/050419_maggots.html has a good article about those last two.

Would you let fish eat the dead skin from your feet? What if it meant you'd have beautiful skin on your feet again and appear more youthful as a result?
